Two
NYC adult lead poisoning cases associated with the use of certain
imported medicines
Rockland County Department of Health, Rockland, NY urges all
residents not to use products known to contain lead
- The Rockland County Department of Health announces that there
were two recent New York City adult lead poisoning cases that have
been associated with the use of Ayurvedic medicines manufactured and
purchased in India.
- The products used by the two adults were: Pregnita, Vasant
Kusumakar Ras with Gold & Pearl, and Mahashakti Rasayan.
- Lead is poisonous and can cause serious health problems,
especially for children and pregnant women. It is important for
anyone using these products to stop using them and call their doctor
or healthcare provider immediately to request a blood lead test
- Ayurvedic medicine is a traditional system of healing arts that
began in India. It involves using certain medicine products and
remedies such as spices, herbs, vitamins, proteins, minerals, and
heavy metals (for example, lead, mercury and arsenic).
- These metals can be dangerous to your health. These products are
commonly sold on the Internet or in stores and are represented as
“Indian” or “South Asian.”
- Do not use any products known to contain heavy metals such as
lead, mercury and arsenic; keep these products away from children;
and talk to your doctor or healthcare provider if you use Ayurvedic,
herbal, traditional remedies or other alternative medicines.
- It can be difficult to tell the difference between safe and
dangerous products. A product may contain high levels of one or more
heavy metals even if they are not listed as ingredients on the
label.
