2007 – mdi Visits Nicaragua – June 17 – 21
mdi’s President and CEO and Executive VP, Dr. Akerkar and Alan
Schwartz, were invited on June 17 through Jun 21,
to visit Managua, Nicaragua by the ProNicaragua Agency. The purpose of the visit
was to teach the ProNicaragua Agency staff about the U.S. medical device
industry and what it would take to have US companies put Nicaragua on
their “short list” when looking to outsource their operations south of
the border.
mdi had the chance to visit several “free trade zone” operators and
found them very impressive. At the present time there was only one US
company located in a Free Trade Zone in Managua assembling medical kits
for export back to the States.
As part of the visit, mdi gave a seminar to the ProNicaragua staff and
the local businesses on the US FDA regulations as well as what the
expectations would be for a U.S. company to locate their operations in
Nicaragua. While Nicaragua is not looking to take jobs from the U.S., they
would be interested in having companies who are already located in
Central America take a look at what they have to offer and maybe put
Nicaragua on their “Short List” when looking to expand or move their
operations to new locations.
