August 15th: Milestone Scientific Receives FDA Clearance of Single Tooth Anesthesia Device

Milestone Scientific Inc. which develops, manufactures, and markets 'intelligent' computer controlled local anesthetic delivery systems, today announced that it has received FDA 510(k) Premarket Notification clearance for the marketing and sale of its Single Tooth Anesthesia Device.

The STA is a Computer Controlled Local Anesthesia Delivery Device that utilizes Milestone Scientific's patented CompuFlo pressure measuring technology to provide audible and visual "biofeedback" to the dentist by measuring the pressure at the tip of the needle. The device is designed to significantly improve the efficiency and economics of the dental office. The STA device incorporates the "biofeedback" elements of Milestone's patented CompuFlo technology, thereby allowing dentists to administer injections accurately into the periodontal ligament space, effectively anesthetizing a single tooth. While the periodontal ligament injection has been around for some time, there has been no effective technology that allows dentists to easily perform the procedure painlessly, safely and predictably until now.

Milestone Scientific Inc. is the developer, manufacturer and marketer of CompuMed® and CompuDent® computer controlled local anesthetic delivery systems. These systems comprise a microprocessor controlled drive unit as well as The Wand® handpiece, a single patient use product that is held in a pen-like manner for injections. The Company also sells the SafetyWand®, which incorporates engineered sharps injury protection features to aid in the prevention of accidental needlesticks. Milestone has also developed proprietary consumer (Ionic White) and professional (CoolBlue) teeth whitening systems that were introduced to the market in early 2005.

August 16th: Medtronic Launches Unique Annuloplasty Ring for Dynamic Repair of the Heart's Mitral Valve

Medtronic, Inc. today announced worldwide introduction of the new and unique Medtronic CG Future® COMPOSITE Annuloplasty Ring used by heart surgeons to repair - rather than replace - a mitral valve that is narrowed or leaking. The new CG Future COMPOSITE Ring is the industry's first annuloplasty product providing both semi-rigid posterior remodeling and fully flexible anterior support, thereby allowing physiologic movement throughout the cardiac cycle.

During mitral valve repair, the surgeon seeks to restore, or "remodel," a narrowed, prolapsed or leaking valve to a more-normal shape and leaflet alignment, thus restoring its functionality. The new Medtronic CG Future® COMPOSITE Annuloplasty Ring incorporates a flexible anterior segment seamlessly connected to a semi-rigid posterior metal portion. The composite design is engineered to support and hold the rear of the valve in alignment while allowing optimum physiological movement for the front of the valve throughout the cardiac cycle. The radiopaque device's firm, yet flexible, construction combines with its low bulk, low profile, and innovative anchoring eyelets designed for strength and predictable, time-efficient implantation.

Surgeons are increasingly opting to repair damaged or degenerated mitral valves rather than replacing them with prosthetic devices. According to the American Heart Association's 2006 Statistical Update, 95,000 persons underwent heart valve surgery in U.S. hospitals during 2003. In a July 2005, report, Health Research International estimated the growth of mitral valve repair in the United States at a combined annual growth rate of 8.6 percent and estimated that 31,000 repair procedures would take place this year.

Medtronic, Inc. headquartered in Minneapolis, is the global leader in medical technology - alleviating pain, restoring health, and extending life for millions of people around the world.
