Two Men Sentenced to Death for Their Involvement in the Chinese Contaminated-Milk Scandal - (RJN 1/23/09)

It was reported in the news that on January 22,2009, the Chinese court in Beijing, sentenced two men to death for their roles in a deadly contaminated-milk scandal that embarrassed the Chinese government and prompted hundreds of families to sue for compensation. The woman in charge of the dairy company at the heart of the crisis was sentenced to life in prison.
The scandal resulted in at least 6 children deaths and 300,000 sickened by infant formula tainted with the industrial chemical melamine, and more than two dozen countries, including the USA, recalled or banned food containing Chinese milk products. The melamine has been shown to be harmless to adults.
The information from the court proceedings, that were held in this past December in Shijiazhuang, CN, where the dairy was located, showed that the top official of the company, Tian Wenhua, had admitted knowing about the contamination for months before alerting officials.
There is a possibility that the death sentences will be commuted to life sentences.
The parents of the children who were affected and their lawyers have been pressured by the police from contacting the media and assembling a class-action lawsuit against the government.
